Some End of December Fun

So the folks at Stereogum have put this together. It's a bunch of mash ups of music that came from the past year. I'm partial to the Pheonix/Cure mix.

What I'm listening to

Happy Friday! Here's just a small playlist of songs that I've been listening to a lot lately. Some of them are older and some of them are newer, but they are all still at the top of my personal playlist. Enjoi.

Company of Thieves Show

Last night I went to see Company of Thieves perform in Troy, NY at Revolution Hall, which is a generally fun place to see a show. I had been listening to their album for a couple of weeks and had generally only warmed up to a couple of the songs on the album.

Quite honestly I was shocked at what a fun band they were live. Genevieve Schatz is just a ball of energy and has a really strong, interesting voice. I think their album doesn't do her justice, quite honestly. So, all in all it was a strong, engaging and interesting show. Here's a clip of them playing Oscar Wilde which has been their radio single on Carson Daly. I wish that it could be from something else, but it is what it is. Enjoi.

The Drive Home

So I was just driving home from a soccer game that we won in the last two seconds of the game, feeling pretty good about myself and life, when I noticed my car lighting up like a night club. There was a police officer on the other side of the road who had pulled someone over and all of his lights were flashing in the dark of the night and the lights were making my car explode with color. Just when I started to notice how cool this all looked, this started playing:

It was as if the world knew my mood. The whole thing felt like a movie or something. The music, and the victory, and the lights just had me feeling really great. And this is why I love music.

A Little Piece of Happiness

I thought for Friday afternoon I would share a song / band that I am a little bit obsessed with right now. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are all sorts of hippie fun. Their song home is filled with love and energy and I just love how the band interacts through the whole thing. You might also want to watch their Letterman gig. Dave looks just entirely out of place next to the band.

A Nice Way to Kill Some Time

My friend Nate pointed me to Said the Gramaphone's 75 Best songs of 2009. Each one has an mp3 attached so you can spend the next few hours listening to their top picks. I'm hoping to getting around to listening a little later today. Enjoy!

Project 2010

The way I'm going to try and frame this blog is through my project for 2010, which is going to be to listen to all of the (6,236) songs on my iPod, alphabetically, by song. I figure this will give me a chance to blabber on about music that I really like, or that I used to like, or that I thought I would like.

With that said a couple of rules for myself:
1. I don't have to listen to a bunch of different versions of the same band playing the same song (like live versions, for example).
2. I do have to listen to different bands covering the same song.
3. So far, that's it.

We'll see if there are any glitches along the way. I figure I'll get this started after the 1st of the year.

The beginning

OK, here's the setup. My friends at HowBourgeois thought that I should start a music blog. Personally, I think it's a terrible idea, but I have a little time on my hands so here I am. Or, more accurately here the blog is. Enjoy.
