Project 2010: Day 29 Oh Fuck Yeah!

I love profanity. Like really enjoy it. I use it a lot, I like when it's used, yet I still think it's powerful, when well used. "The Blankest Year" by Nada Surf does this. Also, it's a two minute and twenty second song. Short songs can be really great. Song 3 from Blur, love it. The Sound of Settling by Death Cab For Cutie, likewise. Plus, kinda makes you want to throw or go to a party. Fuck Yeah!

Also this is pretty great (especially the shaky camera work):

Project 2010: Day 28

And now for something completely different. Or maybe just tangential. Today I heard "Black Hole" by She & Him. Actually, I heard a ton of songs whose titles started with "black" today, but this one had Zooey Daschanel singing. Which had me flashing on "500 Days of Summer." I loved that movie. This is my favorite scene:

I don't think there's ever enough Beck. Ever.

Project 2010 Days 23-27

There are certain artists or songs that make me think of a very specific person, or time or place- or being in a particular place with a particular person at a particular time. Jack Johnson is one of those artists. He makes me think of one of my friends, and of five or seven years ago. And of summer. And of being by the pool. And of rainy days inside. And being calm and happy where you are. I know lots of people aren't into him, but every time I hear a song by him I smile. And that is why I enjoy Jack Johnson.

Some other thoughts:

This is a terrible version of Thomas Function's "Belly of the Beast" but I love the song and it's what I could find:

Can't pass up the opportunity to post this, especially because I love how she looks in 1970:

I actually have an R. Kelly song on my ipod? How did that get on there?

Going from Motion City Soundtrack to Harry Chapin is pretty jarring.

A friend told me that the Mika album was really good. Never followed his music advice ever again.

Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love" is far superior on The Dance album, then their older version.

There are a lot of "Bird" songs. Who knew?

Speaking of artists who remind me of people, They Might Be Giants always remind me of my friend Jon. So here's this:

Project 2010: Days 16-22

Ben Lee has a song called "Begin." The song takes place in New York City, and every time I go down to visit this song gets into my head. The fact is I really enjoy his entire "Awake Is The New Sleep" album. He's positive. He's fun. He sounds like he is constantly in love. And I love that about him.

I might go into my love of the Lemonheads and Evan Dando later. But for now I will give you this; it is adorable:

Project 2010: Day 15: Australia

I love Australia. OK, I've never been. But I do love the idea of Australia. Also, the song Australia. It just makes you want to yell "la la la la!"

Seeing the Shins play at McCarren Park Pool is one of my most memorable concert experiences. It's a gigantic Robert Moses era pool in Brooklyn that had not been used in years as a pool. Several years ago they started to have shows there with the bands playing on a stage at the edge of the pool and the audience standing in the drained pool. In my mind it's a idea ripe for Lincoln Park Pool in Albany except that the band would have to be in the middle.

Another reason I love Australia is Youth Group. Today I hit the "B's" which meant listening to "Babies In Your Dream." I really enjoy Toby Martin's vocals and the the music just takes me to a happy place. Of their albums, "Skeleton Jar" is my favorite. I think their music has the rare quality of being calm and melodic but still driven.

Oh, also- made it to the "B's"!

Here's what I listened to today:

An Audience With The Pope - Elbow

Project 2010: Day 14

I either own a lot of R.E.M. (which I do) or they favor songs that begin with the letter "A." I think it's probably more the former than the latter, but we'll see. Either way, I will always love them.

I really love Ben Folds, just not his first two solo albums. "The Ascent Of Stan" is so lyrically interesting and so musically boring.

I also listened to the new OKGO album. It's just not good. They're last couple of albums were really literate, interesting, and fun. On a first listen, I just thought it was uninspired.

Finally, I listened to Vampire Weekend's new album again. I liked it a lot the first two times. Liked it even more this time. It's just a fun album. Here's what else I listened to today:

As Summer Pass - Sofia Talvik
As We Go U, We Go Down - Guided By Voices

Project 2010: Day 13 - Indie Crush

Today I'm going to talk about one of my indie crushes: Bright Eyes. I absolutely love listening to Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. I know he's not for everyone, but his lyrics and his melodies just get stuck in my head. He sings about life as many of us live and experience it. He sings about war, love, lust, being drunk, being loved, being caught, being scared, and just plan being young in America right now and the weirdness that all of that means.

With that said, here are a few of my favorites (First Day Of My Life might be one of my favorite music videos ever- did I mention I've been in a really sappy mood, lately?):

Some other observations for today:
Brian Setzer had the first song so far where I just wanted it to end. It couldn't finish soon enough. At all.

I love Dashboard Confessional a little too much. When "As Lovers Go" came on I wanted to belt it out in my cubicle. And I have a terrible voice. It would have been good for no one.

Here's my list for today:
Are We The Waiting - Green Day
Are You A Hypnotist? - The Flaming Lips
Are You Devo - Shelby Sifers
Are You Going To Be My Girl - JET
Are You In? - Incubus

Project 2010: Days 9, 10, and 11

So, I missed a few updates, but I've been listening to a bunch of music. According to the ipod I've gone beyond the 200 song mark.

I listened to a bunch of songs about America, Angels, Animals, and an Ann, Anna, Annie string.

I heard maybe one of my favorite songs, "American Music" by Voilent Femmes.

Today, though, I had an epiphany. One that I should have had years ago if I was paying attention. Motion City Soundtrack's song "Antonia" is the same as Ben Fold Five's "Kate." I would feel like less of an idiot for not realizing it if Motion City didn't actually namecheck BFF. Oh well. Live and learn. I enjoy both.

Project 2010: Day 8 - Thinking About Crushes

"Always love, hate will get you every time - Nada Surf

Today apparently I was in a totally sappy mood. "Always Love" by Nada Surf just totally hit me the right way, but really Phantom Planet's "Always On My Mind" was what got me. The song just does a really good job of describing a crush. A horrible, horrible crush. I think the song might have been more appropriate for spring, which for me is the season of crushes, but I'll still give it its due in January:

Here's what I got through today. Again, it's a short list because I've been catching up on some of my podcasts:
Alone, Jealous And Stoned - The Secret Machines

Project 2010: Day 7 All Done With The All's

Today I finished up all of the "all's." I honestly thought it would take longer, but here I am starting with the "alone's." (there are only three of them, though, so I think it'll be OK.) First of all today I got to hear this song, which always makes me happy!

It's just so incredibly hooky!

Anyways, today also got me thinking about how great the Mermaid Avenue disks were. For those of you who don't know, these were collaborations between Wilco and Billy Bragg who took songs that Woody Guthry wrote but never recorded and put them onto two albums, sometimes with the help of Natalie Merchant. The two albums sound great but also have songs that are both just goofy and fun and others that are socially progressive. Today's song, "All You Fascists" is pretty much what you would expect. Here are two of my favorites from Mermaid Avenue:

All Right Now - Free
All She's Got - Sum 41
All Systems Go - Box Car Racer
All That Never Happens - 10,000 Maniacs
All The Kings Men - Wild Beasts
All The Pretty Faces - The Killers
All The Pretty Girls - Fun.
All The Small Things - Blink-182
All The Trees Of The Field Will Clap Their Hands - Sufjan Stevens
All The Way To Reno - R.E.M.
All The Way To Heaven - Guster
All These Things That I've Done - The Killers
All Things Reconsidered - Phish
All This Time - Heartless Bastards
All This Will Pass - Youth Group
All Time Lows - Hellogoodbye
All Together Now - The Beatles
All Unfolding - Ah Holly Faml'y
All We Ask - Grizzly Bear
All We Have Is Now - The Flaming Lips
All You Deliver - Jose Gonzalez

Today's Musical Crush

I've been keeping a list of bands that I want to learn more about, and listen to a little bit more. I've been going down the list and finding out more information about these bands and trying to find some music by them when I've had a little bit of down time. One of these bands is Freelance Whales.

Now, I wouldn't say I'm in love with them. It's not like the torrid musical affair I've been having with Sufjan Stevens, or my intense feelings of longing for Noah And The Whale (I know, whales Everywhere!), but I definitely have a crush. I definitely want to hear more. And I am definitely jealous of people in Chicago who can see them play with Surfer Blood this month.

I would tell what they sound like- with their interesting orchestration, and melodic vocals, but you should just listen for yourself:

Project 2010: Day 6; Passed 100 Songs

Today I hit my first random landmark: I passed the 100 song mark!

One of the best things I heard today was Nada Surf's "All Is A Game." I forget how much I like this album, and really need to listen to it more often.

Also, I heard maybe my favorite corny 90's song: "All For You" by Sister Hazel. I mean, who doesn't like it when a song has an a capella part?

I know, I know, corny. Also, I went from Sigur Ros singing in fake Icelandic quietly to Nirvana which was pretty jarring.

Here's the list of today's songs- I am still steeped in "All" songs:
All Alright - Sigur Ros
All Apologies - Nirvana
All Around Us - Donavan Frankenreiter
All At Once - Jack Johnson
All At Once - Pete Yorn
All At Once (It's Not Important) - The Secret Machines
All For You - Our Lady Peace
All For You - Sister Hazel

All Of These Dreams (Live) - Phish
All Of This - Blink-182
All Of Your Love - Hellogoodbye
All Our Summer Songs - Saturday Looks Good To Me
All Over Again - Phantom Planets
All Over Town - Saturday Looks Good To Me
All Over You - Live

Project 2010: Day 5

I did not make a lot of progress today. Mostly because I listened to the new All Songs Considered podcast which had some really interesting stuff this week. I especially enjoyed Freelance Whales and Broken Bells. I also listened to a Mountain Goats show that All Songs posted recently.

But enough about that. I did manage to listen to four different versions of "All Along The Watchtower," none of which is the Jimi Hendrix version, which also happens to be my favorite. Apparently I don't own that, which will have to change.

Instead I had one by Bob Dylan, one by the Grateful Dead, one by Dylan AND the Dead, and one By Dave Matthews. Go figure.

Also, today I started on the songs that start with the word "all," and there are a ton of them. Like 60 or so. I will be spending days listening to "all" songs. Anyways, here's today's pretty meager list:

Alive - SR-71
Alive With The Glory Of Love - Say Anything
All About Soul - Billy Joel
All Along The Watchtower - Bob Dylan
All Along The Watchtower - Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dead
All Along The Watchtower - Dave Matthews Band
All Along The Watchtower - Grateful Dead

And Now For Something Completely Different....

My friend John just started watching Lost. Like, Season One Episode One a few days ago, and he is trying to finish the whole thing by the season premiere on February 2nd. He's blogging about it here. It's pretty amusing.

Project 2010: Day 4, Planes, Trains, and Trains

One of the random things that will make me like a song is if the music or the singer sounds like some sort of a train. Or a plane. The song that once again reminded me of that is "Airline To Heaven" which is off of the second Mermaid Avenue album by Wilco and Billy Bragg, which starts with drums and and guitar playing that sounds like a train. The sounds of a train just push the song forward in a really positive way. Actually for the first few seconds I thought it might be "Bowl Of Oranges" by Bright Eyes, which I also love, although in this version the train sound is a little bit more muffled.

Phish's "Scent Of A Mule" sounds as if a train is bearing down right on you, in my mind (no idea where these images are coming from...).

Of course, right after "Arline To Heaven" the Indigo Girls' "Airplane came on where they sing as if they were taking off. Again, I love it. So, that is my endorsement of the day: songs that sound like big transportation vehicles. Here's a list of what I listened to today:

Ahead Of The Curve - Monsters Of Folk
Ahhh Good Country - Animal Collective
Ain't Even Done With The Night - John Mellencamp
Ain't Got No Grass - Tribe
Ain't Got No Troubles - Panda Bear
Ain't It The Life - Foo Fighters

Ain't Wastin' Time No More - The Allman Brothers Band
Air - Hair (New Cast Recording)

Project 2010: Day 3 - January 3rd

Today I made some good progress on running down songs on my ipod. I got through all of the "Agains" and the "Afters."

Some thoughts:
I listened to three versions of Again I Go Unnoticed by Dashboard Confessional. My favorite is from "The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most" EP. It just pushes a little bit harder than the other two versions.

Listening to Aeroplane Blues, I wonder if it is in any way connected to Neutral Milk Hotel's "Aeroplane Over The Sea"? If it is, I am not quite sure how.

I really do love "Age Six Racer." It always reminds me of the very beginning of Fall when Summer is fading away. I have always been and still am a Summer kid. I live for it. Listening to the song right now, as it is freezing cold outside makes me wish that it was once again the kind of nice outside that draws you out and makes you want to walk around outside and have adventures. Oh well. Here's a version of a song that some kid attached a homemade video to.

This is what I listened to today:

Adia - Sarah McLachlan
Admit It!!! - Say Anything
Adon Olam - The Israeli Scouts
Adrift - Jack Johnson
The Adventure - Angels & Airwaves
Aeroplane Blues - The Black Keys
Africa Bamba - Santana

Project 2010 Day 2: January 2, 2010: A Contrarian's view on Grizzly Bear

So, in 2009 lots of people were talking about Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest as one of the best albums of the year. I personally think that it's a very pretty album, but I never thought it was all that engaging. "About Face" is a perfect example of this.

It's a very pretty song, to be sure, but I certainly wouldn't seek it out. In the background it's very nice, but I never really actively listen to it, or want it on when I'm driving, and I feel like most of the album is like that. On the other hand I will say that "Two Weeks" is a lot of fun, and also has a great/disturbing video that goes with it.

Some other observations: Every day so far I've been getting a weird 30 second intro or transition track. Yesterday it was A0001 by Thursday. Today it was "Action" by The Starting Line. "Action" actually transitioned really well into "Adam's Song." Weird. "Adam's Song" then ends wanting to go into "All the Small Things," but then doesn't because of the way I'm listening to everything.

Acid 8000 has a great sample of a song that I don't know that goes "If you don't make your booty move, your booty must be dead." I love it.

I also listened to two version of "About Mr. Brown," a song I don't particularly like because I was too lazy to get up and skip the second version.

I will definitely talk about Sufjan Stevens in a later post as he is my, as well as 1,000 other people's, indie crush.

"Across the Sea" is Weezer's most depraved song. I really hate it except for the part of me that really loves it. I could probably write a whole post on it, but instead you're getting my non-love of Grizzly Bear.

Of everything I listened to, I think "Add It Up" might be my favorite, confirming that inside, I am still 14 years old.

Here's a list of what I listened to today:

About Face - Grizzly Bear
About Mr. Brown - O.A.R.
About Mr. Brown (Live) - O.A.R.
Above Ground - Norah Jones
Abraham - Sufjan Stevens
Abram - Jose Gonzalez
The Absence of God - Rilo Kiley
Absolutely Sweet Marie - Bob Dylan
AC/DC Bag - Phish
Acapella - Kelis
Accelerate - R.E.M.
Accidental Death - Rilo Kiley
Ache For You - Ben Lee
Acid 8000 - Fatboy Slim
Across The Fields - 10,000 Maniacs
Across The Sea - Weezer
Act Nice And Gentle - The Black Keys
Act of the Apostle - Belle & Sebastian
Act Of the Apostle II - Belle & Sebastian
Action - The Starting Line
Adam's Song - Blink 182
Add It Up - Violent Femmes
Addicted - Simple Plan
Adding to the Noise - Switchfoot

Happy Palindrome Day!

In honor of today being a Palindrome (01.02.2010) here's They Might Be Giant's singing "I Palindrome I" on Letterman about 1,000 years ago. The entire song is a word palindrome.

Project 2010: Day 1

I decided to start Project 2010 on the first of the year and I made it through exactly six out of 6,571 songs while laying on my couch cursing New York's horribly late last call. At this rate I should be done around never. Here's what I listened to:

A - Barenaked Ladis
A-OK - Motion City Soundtrack
A-Punk- Vampire Weekend
A0001 - Thursday
The Abduction Of Margaret - The Decemberists
About An Hour Ago - O.A.R

In some of the other posts I'll highlight an artist or a song, but that will be for later. Today, I will just say that it was incredibly weird listening to just one song off of "The Hazards of Love" and then going directly into an O.A.R. song, especially because The Abduction of Margaret goes directly into another song. It was never meant to stand alone. With that I'm off to listen to some more music.
